We visit the homes of orphan children and children in need living in Istanbul and we periodically deliver shopping cards to their families which they can use in grocery stores to support their food needs. With food cards, families can procure food shopping from specific markets and fulfil their own needs in a manner worthy of human dignity.

How do we identify families who we can help?

Application and registration process of children in need

We only consider applications from families with children in need.

We receive applications for aid by telephone, by Whatsapp message, by email and in person at the association headquarters. We request documents from each applicant to process their application for aid (identity document, residence certificate, health report, etc.). We electronically file completed documents with a family number allocated to each family, so that we can monitor each family aid process regularly. In strategising for future support, we also identify and include in our system those in need who do not know how to ask for help in the neighbourhoods we visit during our social review studies.

Procedure to determine needs

Our social investigation teams, consisting of social workers and volunteers, make visits to homes and gather information in order to examine requests for help, to authenticate the information received and determine the status of needs. We recognise the family members, the situation of the house and what is needed, and then we organise aids by making an evaluation. During these initial visits, we do not give immediate/ direct information to claimants as to whether or not aid will be given and what amount will be given.

Evaluation of access to aid

We determine and evaluate children’s needs regardless of language, religion, race, location and gender. We determine a social assistance score for each family by evaluating the information received as a result of visits to homes according to objective criteria with our aid evaluation commission. Within the provisions of the association, we deliver appropriate donated items or/ and cash aids to the families we have decided to help, and we do this by visiting their homes with the sense of affinity, in an effort to establish friendly and secure humanitarian relations.

Reevaluation

We monitor changes in the families' situations at specific intervals and/or in line with new information and reassess the decision to continue, change or discontinue the assistance provided. (Applicants who we inform will not access aid, yet subsequently experience a change in their circumstances, can reapply and ask for a revisit.)

Clothing Aid

Winter Clothing Aid

Since 2016, we provide winter clothing to ensure that children are not adversely affected by the cold weather. Therefore we organise winter clothing dress-up events every winter. The children, accompanied by a parent/ guardian, meet our volunteers at a store and together they choose coats, boots and winter clothes and then they head to their homes, while we warm ourselves with the smiles left from them.

We would like to thank our benefactors who have supported our delivery of winter clothing aid to children, amounting to 127.360 TL since 2016.

School Clothing Aid

In order to prevent children from dropping out of school due to financial difficulties, as of 2019, we have started to provide school clothes for orphan children and children in need at the beginning of each academic year. Our volunteers meet children and their parents/ guardians at a store, select and supply all of the children’s school clothes and, in so doing, share the joy and excitement they experience on the first day of school with them.

We would like to thank our benefactors who have supported us in the first year of our school clothing project which provided children with uniform aid amounting to 9.450 TL*.

Eid Campaigns

Each year, we provide holiday and food aid to help orphan children and children in need have a happy Eid and to contribute to their food and clothing needs during Ramadan/ before Eid al-Fitr and before Eid al-Adha. Furthermore, in accordance with the age and status of the children, we present candy, prayer sets, toys and holiday allowance packages to them.

As part of these campaigns, the children we have identified through our social review activities in Istanbul can, with a parent/ guardian, accompany our volunteers to a clothing store and choose the clothes they like. On the one hand we share the excitement of buying the holiday clothing that children wish, on the other hand we prepare a nice environment for volunteers to spend time with the children.

We have been working in Istanbul since 2015 and in Jerusalem as of 2018. In Jerusalem, where 86% of the population lives below the poverty line, we enable hundreds of children to welcome Eid with their new holiday clothes.

Educational Aid

Education Support Scholarship

In the Affinity Project, we support refugee children who have left school due to financial difficulties and started work to support their families: we grant them education scholarships to meet their needs while they re-attend school. We also support children with education scholarships to remain in education, rather than leave to work in support of their low income families. We keep track of their school enrollments and school attendance. We enable children to develop more rapidly psychologically, socially and academically by regularly participating in reinforcement lessons, games, and activities within the scope of our project.

Stationery Aid

Since 2018, we have been preparing children in need for school with stationery aid at the beginning of each academic year. Our school bags which contain everything from notebook to crayon, geometry set to file, are an impetus to the smiles of children and a refreshment to their families.

Bills, Rent and Health Aid

We provide support to pay rent and bills for families of the children that we identify with our social investigation teams, to try to ease the burden on the parents who are mostly accessing work through insecure one-day jobs.

We inform children and their families about how to utilise health services provided by state hospitals so that they can access appropriate services as soon as possible when they face health problems. Also we take them to hospital appointments and follow up treatment processes with voluntary interpreters when necessary. And, when needed, we contribute to medical expenses for treatment, prescribed home devices and medicines, as well as health aids.

Emergency Relief

The most affected part of society from war, hunger, famine and natural disasters is undoubtedly its children.... Although we have identified our primary working area as Istanbul, we occasionally organise assistance activities in various areas to address the needs of children who are in the difficult situation of urgent need. When we temporarily collect funds for these emergency relief campaigns, we provide a relevant section to donate under “Online Donations” as well as inform our followers on social media.

"Cleaning Package Assistance"

During the period of the Covid-19 outbreak, the impact of which has been seen all over the world, many parents have been unable to continue their daily jobs. Therefore, some families do not have income or their income has fallen well below the minimum standard of living. In order to support orphan children and children in need who are living in these households, we started a hygiene package study and provided cleaning package assistance to the houses we visited. In March-May 2020, we delivered 105 cleaning packages containing detergent, bathroom-kitchen cleaning materials and personal cleaning products to families in Istanbul.

"Hope for Rohingya Children"

In 2018, with support of our benefactors and of NGOs working in the Cox's Bazar district of Bangladesh (where Rohingya camps are located), we established İyilikhane Village consisting of 28 bamboo houses and we also built five playgrounds consisting of slides and swings in order to contribute to the improvement of the living conditions of 1.2 million Rohingya, of whom more than 500 thousand are children, living in “the worst conditions in the world” having fled Myanmar and taken refuge in Bangladesh.

In addition, we continue our support in the region towards education activities given to children in the Child Rehabilitation Center, which provides education for 200 children in Rohingya camps.

"Emergency Relief for Syria"

In 2018 we provided urgent winter aid to children to protect them from the freezing cold while living in very difficult conditions as refugees within Syria's borders due to the civil war in the country. Through the support of philanthropists and the Turkish Red Crescent, we have delivered winter clothing and blankets to hundreds of orphan children and children in need.
